Chiropteran (bat) skull CT scan

Researchers from the Biology and Mechanical Engineering Departments have come together for a multidisciplinary study on the topology and function of the chiropteran (bat) skull. Using a CT scan performed in the METLAB, finite element models will be developed to analyze stress distributions throughout the skull in response asymmetrical biting forces. This type of information will allow biologists to make inferences about the relationships between skull topology, diet, and evolutionary tradeoffs between stability and weight.
